Separate a formula gap from an evaluation gap. One candidate needs practice deriving uncertainty under a stated model. Another can calculate a metric but cannot explain whether the evaluation supports the conclusion.
Our books address parts of both tasks. They do not replace a complete mathematical-statistics course.
A diagnostic question
You compare twenty models on one final dataset and report the best result. Every model's coefficients were fitted on earlier data. Is the reported winner an independent final evaluation?
No. The selection of the winning procedure used the final outcomes. Early-only coefficient fitting does not undo that selection. The result can support exploratory comparison, but the stronger claim requires an evaluation protocol that accounts for choosing the procedure.
If this distinction is the gap, the Quant Research Project Lab provides a concrete setting in which to investigate it.
Choose the appropriate scope
Probability workbook: introductory estimation, dependence, finite probability and explained exercises. Useful when you need to state assumptions and calculate within a simple model. Preview.
Research lab: baselines, chronological evaluation, feature availability, repeated experiments, regime change and interpretation of synthetic results. Includes code, recorded output and a memo. Preview.
Neither is a comprehensive treatment of maximum likelihood, hypothesis-testing theory, asymptotics or all statistical models that a particular role may assess. Check the employer's current preparation guidance and your actual technical foundation.
What useful practice produces
A result with a named metric and comparator; a clear distinction between fitting and selection; an explanation of dependence; and a conclusion limited to the evidence. Those outputs make a discussion more precise than a list of memorized definitions.
Start free with confidence interval interpretation and the leakage checklist. Then inspect the research lab's full contents to decide whether it addresses your gap.
