An industry resume selects the academic work most relevant to a particular responsibility. It does not need to erase your research identity or turn every experiment into a commercial result.
Begin with the target listing. Then identify the question, method, evaluation and personal contribution in each experience. Those facts usually belong ahead of a long account of the literature.
An original fictional compression
Academic description: “Research on inverse problems in a noisy measurement system, including methodological development, numerical experiments and several group presentations.”
Evidence ledger: the candidate implemented the comparison runner, evaluated two methods under controlled noise conditions and documented the region where the more complex method failed. Theory was developed jointly with an adviser.
Resume version: “Implemented controlled comparisons of two estimators under varying measurement noise; documented a failure region and presented the implications for the next experiment.”
The revised sentence identifies work that can be discussed. It does not claim sole invention of the method or hide the negative result.
Decide what to compress
Group related teaching or service entries when their separate detail is not relevant to the target. Select publications that add evidence rather than reproducing a full bibliography by default. Keep a complete academic CV available if the employer requests it.
Publication status must remain accurate: submitted, accepted and published are different states. A coauthored paper should not become an implied solo accomplishment. If the material cannot be shared, provide an appropriate description without exposing restricted information.
Keep technical depth available
Compression moves detail; it should not remove your ability to explain it. Prepare a short research opening, a technical layer and deeper supporting material. The resume should make it easy for an interviewer to choose a line of inquiry.
Before using a method name, check that you can describe its assumptions and why you chose it. A concise document with vague expertise claims is not an improvement over a long factual CV.
A selection worksheet
For each CV entry, mark: directly relevant; useful supporting evidence; available on request; omit for this role. Write one reason for each choice. If everything is “directly relevant,” revisit the actual responsibilities and the reader's limited attention.
There is no universal page rule that overrides employer instructions. Aim for readable, focused material and supply the requested document type.
